Amal Clooney, who made her bones as a human rights attorney before earning the title of Mrs. George Clooney, gave an interview to the BBC on Monday wherein she went after GOP presidential frontrunner Donald Trump, saying that he does not represent “U.S. values.”
While Clooney cites Trump’s oft-criticized “attitude towards women” as a component of her objection to a Trump presidency, she appears to be most put off by Trump’s nationalist streak, something that has evidenced itself in his call to protect the United States through a variety of proposed security measures that include building a wall at the southern border and putting the brakes on Muslim immigration into the country. Following is a portion of what Clooney had to say during the interview:
"When you listen to what the leading candidate on the Republican side has been saying about building walls, about excluding Mexicans, and saying, you know, there has to be a complete shut down on all Muslims entering … he kept saying 'they' only want jihad, 'they' don’t believe in our way of life, 'they' don't respect our system.
And when he says 'they,' and you watch the media coverage afterward, people I think should have been saying, do you mean the 1.5 billion people around the world who fit that description? Do you mean the people who are U.S. citizens who are members of your military, who are the vast majority of whom are not extremists or violent in any way?"
In fairness, the case could be made that Clooney, herself the child of a Sunni Muslim, is deferring to both the interests of her heritage as well as her inclinations as an attorney specializing in the area of human rights when she takes Trump to task for his views. All too often, the rest of us “great unwashed” are treated to the “do as I say, not as I do” treatment from wealthy liberals, and that appears to be the case here, as well; according to an article over at Breitbart by Kipp Jones, in addition to elaborate security measures the Clooneys have taken previously to protect themselves from the rest of the world, they have managed to invoke the assistance of the mayor of the Italian town where their Lake Como estate is located in further isolating themselves from the rest of the world. Last year, Roberto Pozzi, mayor of Laglio, issued an order banning anyone from leaving their car near the estate, and anyone caught trespassing, which, in this case, means only leaving a car within 100 meters of the Clooney property, would be hit with a $600 fine.
According to the same Breitbart article, the ordinance has incurred the wrath of locals, with one local fisherman, Livio de’Angeli, saying, “I used to be able to leave my car here on the ramp leading down to the water, but now I can’t—I’d get fined by the police. You’re not allowed to park anywhere near the villa and you can’t take a boat within 100 meters of the house. It’s like living in a mini dictatorship.”
How about that? A mini-dictatorship, overseen by the same folks who want you to enjoy all the pleasures that come with living in a country that has, essentially, open borders.
