The Paris family has not purchased new furniture in years. We desperately needed a new living room set, and had saved up about $3,000. I assumed that this was going to be a local purchase and we would end up visiting the area furniture and department stores to make our selection. Being an Internet guy, I stopped for a moment and wondered if there was any way this could be done online. My first thought was that it would be unlikely due to shipping costs. After all, what would it cost to ship a a couch or a love seat? Probably entirely too much, and the shipping would no doubt wipe out any savings on the furniture itself.
Well, I was dead wrong. In just a few minutes of searching I learned that buying furniture online is really not a novelty at all. I discovered quite a few websites that sell new furniture, but ultimately I ended up at Overstock.com (Overstock was mentioned repeatedly in articles I was finding on the topic of online furniture buying). No kidding, within about ten minutes I was able to find some amazing deals that I forwarded to my wife for her approval. A day or two later, we were ready to pull the trigger on our furniture purchase.
Here's how it all worked out. We joined the Club O Rewards program for $19.95. This entitled us to free shipping and a minimum of 5% cash back on our purchases. We ordered a black leather couch, love seat, and recliner. All together we spent a total of $1,100. We did, in fact, get the free shipping and about $55 in cash back rewards on our purchase. I should also add that since these were Internet transactions there was also no sales tax.
Any Downside Of Buying Furniture Online?
Of course, there are disadvantages to buying furniture this way. You don't get to sit on it and examine it in person. This is why it is extremely important to read the reviews on each item before buying. Secondly, when the furniture arrived it was carried just over the threshold into my house. That meant that I had to unbox it, perform some minor assembly (screwing legs on, etc...) and move it into the room where I ultimately wanted it. In my view, this was well worth it for what was at least a 50% savings. In fact, the quality of what we received would have probably justified a retail price of about $2,500. Depending on what you purchase, there may be more substantial assembly work involved. One option here is to hire a local assembly person (which is what I do when buy office furniture that needs to be assembled). It should also be noted that if you decide to return the furniture you would have to pay the return shipping (unless it was damaged).
We were so happy with how this all turned out that we purchased a new King mattress and box spring set from Overstock.com as well. It was a big brand name and again delivered for free to the door with 5% cash back rewards (a total cost of only $640). Again, a savings of at least 50%.
