The Most Wonderful Christmas Gift Of All

My wife Ann and I were both sound asleep, it was just past midnight on July 11th and the phone rang.  It was our daughters, Joy and Faith. They were hysterical and crying as they tried to explain their predicament.  They were calling us just after being bumped off of Interstate 95 by a reckless driver.

While they were on their cell phone with us they were still fastened in their seat belts hanging upside down. The car had rolled multiple times and ended up in a heavily wooded area about 100 yards from the side of the highway (this picture was taken the next morning at the salvage yard).

Ann and I jumped in our car to drive to the location of the accident. There was no discussion on the drive, we were both silently praying for our girls.  The twenty minute drive seemed like an eternity.  When we arrived at the accident scene we saw multiple rescue vehicles lining the road, and deep into the woods the tail lights of our Ford Taurus wagon (which was completely upside down). That moment I will never forget; time stood still and I could not breathe.

Out of the darkness we saw two people walking toward us.  I simply could not believe what I was seeing.  How could our girls walk away from something like this?  The Florida State Trooper told us how 'lucky' we were.  He went on to explain how this could have ended so much worse than it did. We know it was much more than luck and we thank God for His hand of protection on our daughters.

The other night the house was so quiet.  Our daughters were both away involved in their own activities.  The quietness made me consider what it would be like without them in our lives.  It reminded me that this summer we very well could have ended up losing both of them.

None of us knows how much time we have left on this earth.  Spend this Christmas as if it will be your last.  Look around you and see how much you already have to be thankful for. For us, this year Christmas came in July, but we will celebrate it again on December 25th.

May God bless you and your family and may you find true meaning in your Christmas celebration in the birth of our Savior.
