As a financial guy I simply can't avoid addressing the so called Black Friday hysteria that hits the country this time of year. What will be especially interesting to evaluate is the year to year comparison of spending (which is always a headline story). I will honestly be very surprised if we don't see a drop in sales compared to last year, but I have been wrong about that before. I am a lightning rod for hard luck stories and have been hearing more of them this year than in my 25 years of giving financial advice. So, people still always seem to find money to spend at Christmas, right? Usually, but that may change this year.
One major change this year is that for many retailers the start of their sale is on Thursday night, not Friday morning. Yes, just after your turkey has started to digest it is time to get in the car and begin your prowl for bargains. Wal-Mart will begin its sale at 10 pm on Thursday evening. Many others will start the bargain prices at midnight. A few have stuck to the traditional early Friday morning schedule, but that list is small in comparison to those shifting to Thursday late night. Many online retailers have already begun their sales, so they are not even waiting for Thursday.
Layaway Makes A Comeback
Starting during the Great Depression, when most people were short on money and had no credit, layaway was devised by retailers. Many stores in recent years disbanded layaway but it has made a recent comeback. Be sure you understand the fees involved when buying via layaway and the cost of not completing your purchase.

My plans for Thursday are to enjoy a nice day with my family, watch some football, eat some turkey, and then drive up to St. Augustine to look at the world's classiest Christmas light display. The only shopping on my list may be a slice of fudge while taking in the lights. Please use the space provided below to list your own deals, links, and suggestions!
